About Falta Special Economic Zone

Located in West Bengal,  Falta Special Economic Zone started its journey in 1984. Previously, it was known by the name of Falta Export Promotion Zone. Similar to all other economic zones in the country, this was an initiative of the Central Government of India. With effect from February 10, 2006, Falta Special Economic Zone comes under the aegis of the Special Economic Zone Act and Rules, as laid down by the notifications issued by the Government of India No. S.O. 195(E) dated February 10, 2006.

The goal of setting up Falta Economic Zone is multifold and includes generation of increased financial transactions, encouragement of investment from both internal and international sources, boosting services and goods, generation of job opportunities, and building up transportation hubs.

Any commodities and services that are imported into or exported from the Domestic Tariff Area through an entity in the Special Economic Zone or a Developer will depending on particular stipulations, clauses and restrictions as laid down in Rule 22 of the Chapter IV of Special Economic Zone Regulations be relieved from the disbursement of tariffs, levies or cess.

After the establishment of Falta Special Economic Zone, two more Special Economic Zones were established. Both of these Special Economic Zones are situated at Sector-V, in Salt Lake, Kolkata. The names of these Special Economic Zones are WIPRO Special Economic Zone for Information Technology and Information Technology Enabled Services and Manikanchan Special Economic Zone for precious stones and ornaments.

Other than the already established Special Economic Zones like Manikanchan, Falta, and Wipro SEZ, the Union Government has sanctioned some more Special Economic Zones to be set up in the eastern and north eastern states of India that come under the authority of the Development Commissioner, Falta Special Economic Zone and are in different phases of execution. The names of these zones are as follows –


  • Leather Complex – Bantala
  • Kulpi Integrated Multi Product Zone
  • Free Trade Warehousing Zone for offering multi product storage facilities at Haldia
  • IT/ITES Special Economic Zones – Rajarhat and Bantala
  • Multi-product Special Economic Zones in Gopalpur and Dubuti in Orissa.
  • Adityapur Special Economic Zone for Vehicles and Parts – Jharkhand

Location of Falta Special Economic Zone

 The Falta Special Economic Zone is closely located to Kolkata. The ambience is free from pollution and peaceful. The distance from the suburban areas of Kolkata is around 45 km and from the center of the city is approximately 55 km. The place enjoys good connectivity through an excellent network of roadways comprising two harbors in Haldia and Kolkata, a State highway, and the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at  Dumdum.

Infrastructural facilities offered by Falta Special Economic Zone

Given below are the various infrastructural facilities offered by Falta Special Economic Zone:

Improved plot and readymade area at reasonable and lucrative rates:


Improved areas of different sizes are offered in the complex to fulfill the needs of various sectors, at a quite affordable lease payment of Rs. 50 (plus Rs 6/- service charge) per square meter every year. It is modified following every 36 months.

Industrial shed:

All the factory sheds in the Falta Special Economic Zone are wholly in use. (The overall area is 6,500 sq meters)

For old industrial shed, the lease payment is Rs. 465 (plus Rs 25/ as service charge) for per sq meter every year.

For Industrial Shed No. 3, the lease payment is Rs.975 (plus Rs 40/- as service charge) per sq meter every year.

For new industrial shed, the lease payment is Rs. 625 (plus Rs 40/- as service charge) per sq meter every year.

Standard Design Factory Building (SDF):

The total area of the standard design factory premises is 15,570 sq meters. The lease payment is Rs. 750 (plus Rs 40/- as service charge) for per sq meter every year and Rupees 375 (plus Rs 25/- as service charge) per sq meter every year forStandard Design Factory GeneralBuilding(underground store).

High quality and steady electricity supply:

The West Bengal State Electricity Board (WBSEB) guarantees nonstop electricity provisions for sectors to be established in the compound, via the service station inside the region itself with a capacity of 132KV. There is arrangement for supply for additional dedicated service line for single units at 33/11 KV.

The duty for power is Rs 1.55 – 3.72 per unit and this is the essential price for various types of users. Furthermore, there are fuel surcharges and demand fees that are amended periodically. Nevertheless, there is an exemption of 20% to 40% on the basic electricity fees, offered to new manufacturing divisions or businesses with usage of more than 50 Horsepower together with 50% discount on basic rate for electricity used between 11 pm to 6 am.

Water supply:

Round the clock water supply is guaranteed by a well-set supply arrangement inside the compound and the rate is Rs. 4/- every 1000 litres.


A self-sufficient Electronic Telephone Exchange has been set up within the compound and there is Ultra High Frequency connection set up within the compound as well with STD /ISD telephonic facilities. Connection is issued on demand.

Container managing jetty:

To ensure hassle free and prompt traffic of 40 feet and 20 feet containers, a self-sufficient container managing jetty has been set up close to the compound. It will take around 2-3 hours to reach Haldia Dock compound by boat from this jetty. Overside packing and unpacking of freight is permitted. The freight of Falta Special Economic Zones is not put through inspection and evaluation at the jetty.

Assistance and records services:

The Development Commissioner’s office functions in the form of a one-window office for every unit in the compound which includes security, customs, and the office of the Labor Commissioner of the West Bengal Government, located inside the compound.

Falta Special Economic Zone comes with a really helpful setting by offering simple methods. This is particularly so in the approval of issues associated with manufacturing sanctions, international partnerships and joint ventures and others through a single-window approval arrangement.

The Development Commissioner has the authority to sanction plans under a routine sanctioning system which is instant with a vision to guarantee swift execution of plans.

Social Infrastructure:

For the advantage of the units in Falta Special Economic Zone, the public infrastructure has been built in an effective way which comprises healthcare facilities, residential amenities, fire station, a market, Technical Training Institute for guidance, banks, skill improvement, police station, post office, and internal security department.
